In Senegal, glass paintings are called “suwer”, a Wolof word directly borrowed from the French sous-verre (behind or under glass).

Depicting funny scenes from daily life, illustrating domestic and street scenes with vivid colors.

The origins of  glass-painting stretch back to ancient cultures. It certainly predates the colonial period in Senegal as by the 17th century the knowledge and practice of glass-painting had taken root in societies south of the Senegal River, present day Senegal.
